There’s often a debate among farmers about which brand of equipment is the best. It really all comes down to the color..and if you’re a farmer, you know what I’m referring to (Go green!). But, we discovered last year, that the best pumpkin planter was….our kiddos!
In my last post, I made reference to the fact that we do not hand plant our 35,000 pumpkin, gourd and squash seeds. But, as I was looking through pictures from our first season at The Pumpkin Ranch, I came across this picture. And then I remembered….we actually did hand plant a few seeds last year in our pumpkin patch..2 acres worth. Why? We had a pretty wet spring and summer last year and part of our field really held water. Dave felt we needed to go back through those 2 acres and spot plant to fill in the bare areas. So, on a 100 degree evening, in the stifling humidity of an Iowa summer, Dave, myself and our 4 year old and 2 year old, set out to plant by hand. The kids were eager to help, so we let them. Dave and I made the holes and the kids dropped the seeds in and covered them with their feet. And, I have to admit, they were a huge help! Can you tell by their sweaty little faces how hard they worked? Only 5 more weeks until planting for the 2011 season at The Pumplin Ranch!
